Sweet Ride Rentals (51 Canal St., Lockport, N.Y. 14094) is at it again with a full calendar of events to keep residents and guests alike, busy all summer long.
Lockport's "Citizen of the Year" and Owner of Sweet Ride Rentals, Ellen Martin, is the mastermind behind the second annual "Sweet Sweet Summer 2014." Last year Lockport saw painted outdoor pianos, a chalk festival, yarn bombing and a giant chalkboard where sweet dreams were recorded. This year chairs throughout Lockport, famous paintings coming alive, giant geography bee, outdoor quilting bee and the 2nd Annual Chalk Festival are all slated to happen.
The summer and "Sweet Sweet Summer" will officially kick off Memorial Day weekend with "Sweet Travel," a 20 by 30-ft. multicolored map of the United States painted in front of Sweet Ride Rentals on Canal St., Lockport.
Employees of Sweet Ride Rentals will come out from behind the counter and turn into living pieces of art at "Sweet Art Alive." Come see the "Girl with a Pearl Earring" or Sargent's "Madame X." Degas didn't want to be known for his ballerinas but his dancers will surely appeal to passersby. Visitors will all able to pose as Magritte's "Son of Man" or Munch's "Scream." Patrons of Sweet Ride Rentals have already begun participating in "Sweet Art Alive."
As announced on LCTV's "Niagara Now" the first person to correctly guess who is featured in the "Son of Man," pictured here, will receive a FREE smoothie at Sweet Ride Rentals. Tweet your answer to @NiagaraFallsUSA. "The resemblance is uncanny," Martin said.
Summer wouldn't be fun without a little, friendly competition. The municipalities of Lockport, N.Y., North Tonawanda, N.Y. and Niagara Falls, N.Y., local businesses and organizations will "Rock the Locks" on Main St., Lockport, and the Tow Path along the Erie Canal. Their designed rocking chairs will be there for the public to enjoy. So, sit back, relax, read a book, enjoy an ice cream or even fish, but don't forget to let us know your favorite!
The 2nd Annual "Sweet Chalk Festival" will be held August 16 - 17. Last year's headliner and the artist responsible for chalking the "Mona Lisa," Carolyn Schultz will return, along with crowd favorite Joe Mahley. New to the event will be Eric Maruscak, who specializes in super heroes and 3-D. There will also be an area for "Little Chalker." Prizes will be available to local artists and students.
"Sweet Quilting Bee" will say goodbye to summer as the members of the Kenan and Dale Quilting Guilds come together and create a quilt honoring Lockportian Aaron Mossell, whose efforts resulted in the integration of the Lockport School System (90 years before Brown v. Board of Education).
