Sweet Sweet Summer

If you’re looking for inspiration or are looking to express your artistic talents in a fun setting, the Lockside Art Center is sponsoring the perfect event with a chance for local artists and students to showcase their talent.

The third annual Sweet Chalk Festival, will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 11-12 in Lockport, at the Pine Street Parking lot, in Lockport, N.Y.

This year, like the years before it, promises to result in gorgeous chalk art. The headliner's for 2015 are depicting a wide subject range. One artist will be creating a 3D pirate ship, and one a Superhero. The other two headliners are taking a more traditional route in depicting Seurat's Sunday on the Grand Jatte. All are expected to be amazing.

"In the past two years, the Sweet Chalk Festival has become a tradition for many in the Western New York area," according to event originator and organizer Ellen Martin. "We've had tremendous local and national talent each year - and this year's event promises to be even better.

For the younger chalkers we selected a Pirate theme to coincide with the Olcott Pirates Festival - and flowers to tie in Lockport in Bloom." according to a press release from the Lockside Art Center.

In addition to the headliners, students are still encouraged to show off their artistic potential and can join the fun by submitting an application to SweetSweetSummer.com, space is limited so young artists are urged to apply soon. High school seniors and college student artists are eligible to compete for "Best in Show" with a $500 prize. Younger students can be entered in for a $250 prize.

Local artist Christine Miller will have works on display, at the Chalk Festival and Lockport Community Market, conducting a painting demo and taking portrait commissions.

This event is free, due to donations from the Grigg Lewis Foundation.

Images from last year's festival show the inventive nature of this friendly competition, and what high standard newcomers can look forward to seeing from the artists. To view photos and for more information visit the Sweet Sweet Summer Facebook page here.
