Niagara Falls USA and the surrounding region offers some of the best hiking trails. With various difficulty levels, hiking can be easy, affordable and fun for the entire family. A trek through the wilderness is a great way to experience Niagara Falls in winter.
If you’re seeking a guided hike, or want to learn more about the great outdoors, partake in one (or all) of the Niagara Region Interpretive Programs Office activities offered this winter. All pre-scheduled programs are free and intended for individuals and families. Register for one (or more!) of the following hikes here. For more information, call 716-282-5154.
December 6: Watercolor Holiday Cards

11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Learn how to start your very own nature journal! This workshop will help you gain knowledge on the importance of nature journals and how to use John Muir Law prompts as starting points! All materials included.

December 18: Arts and Crafts Night

6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. Come to Niagara Falls State Park for a fun night of arts and crafts indoors. Visitors will be able to use our eco-friendly paints to create nature inspired artwork to take home.
December 19: Lug Your Mug in a Winter Wonderland

5:30 p.m.-7:00 p.m. Take a breather from the holiday season with a park educator for a relaxed walk around Niagara Falls with a warm drink and beautiful sights. Please bring your own thermos!
December 20: Snowshoeing

9:30 a.m.-11:00 a.m. Learn how to snowshoe with a park naturalist and take a guided walk through DeVeaux Woods. Snowshoes will be provided! (If there is not enough snow, this will turn into a winter hike.)

December 21: Woofs and Waterfalls

2:30 p.m.-4:00 p.m. Enjoy a leisurely walk with your dog and a Park Naturalist around Goat Island. It is not necessary to have a dog to participate, however, all dogs in attendance must be up to date on immunizations, leashed, and under control.

10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Join a Park Naturalist for a casual guided walk to celebrate the last weekend of 2025 and welcome in the new year!

2:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. Enjoy the first day of the New Year with your dog at Niagara Falls State Park! Take a leisurely walk from Prospect to Terrapin Point and take in the extraordinary views of all three waterfalls that make up Niagara Falls.

2:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. Join us for a walk to view the Niagara River and War of 1812 Cemetery, and to see the lighthouse and Old Fort Niagara from the parking lot. There will be a tour of the Officer’s Club to view the paintings and visit the museum displays.
January 10: Bark Owls

10:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m. This craft is a HOOT! Join us in the Education Center for this nature-inspired craft while learning about the different owls found in our region and how to identify them! Materials for craft will be provided.

2:00 p.m.-3:30 p.m. Join us for a woods walk to find inspiration before going inside to create a watercolor painting! All materials provided. For individuals and families ages 8+.

11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Celebrate Winter Trails month with a walk around Artpark State Park, exploring some of the lesser-known trails and learning about the art in the park!
January 16: Flashlight Frolic
DeVeaux Woods State Park, 3120 De Veaux Woods Drive, Niagara Falls
5:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Join a park naturalist for a guided dark evening walk. Visitors are encouraged to bring along a flashlight and explore DeVeaux Woods at night.
January 17: Trees in Winter
Devil's Hole State Park, Niagara Scenic Parkway, Niagara Falls
10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. We will look at some of the most common trees in our area and talk about how they survive the winter. Some points we will cover are: Do conifers photosynthesize in the winter? Why do some trees keep their leaves? How do trees help wildlife survive?
January 18: Feathers in Frost

11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Winter is here and with it brings plenty of migrating waterfowl and gulls. Join a park naturalist to discover the wildlife along the great Niagara River Corridor.

10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. An easy walk through DeVeaux Woods State Park. Along the way we will talk about interesting features of the natural world and maybe a bit of history. Note that the path is not paved. Seniors 62+ only.

10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. An easy stroll down the Rim Trail toward Whirlpool State Park. We’ll see some great views and talk about some of the natural features that make our park special. Please note that the walk will be less than a mile, and the trail is not paved. Seniors 62+ only.
February 27: DIY Bird Houses
Niagara Falls State Park, 332 Prospect St., Niagara Falls
5:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Join a park naturalist in a hands-on birdhouse building program. We will talk about some of our local birds, and then participants will get the opportunity to build and decorate their own birdhouse and take it home with them.
February 28: Frosty Falls Walk
Niagara Falls State Park, 332 Prospect St., Niagara Falls
10:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Goat Island turns into a frosty, frozen world as the temperatures drop… but the Falls keep flowing! Join a park naturalist to explore these breathtaking, but chilly views!
February 28: Phenology — Observing the Seasonal Changes
Reservoir State Park, 5777 Witmer Road, Niagara Falls
1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. Short talk about phenology – the study of seasonal changes and how to add this aspect to your nature journaling. If you decide to pursue it, you will be following in the steps of Thoreau whose journals are still referred to today by scientists.
