About The Great Lakes

Bordered by Ontario, Canada and New York, Lake Ontario is the easternmost of the Great Lakes and is nestled between the mighty Niagara River to the west and the St. Lawrence River Valley to its east.

Like all of the Great Lakes, Lake Ontario as it is known today was the result of glacial shifting and warming of the earth’s climate at the end of the most recent ice age about 13,000 years ago.

When the first settlers arrived, the lake became a hub of commercial activity following the War of 1812 and became a major passage of transportation, trade and a fresh water source. Major battles occurred on and around the lake and many ships have sank, taking the crew down with them. You can still now find thousands of sunken ships on the bed of Lake Ontario.

Over the years Lake Ontario has transformed from just a mode of transportation to a major resource for fun and recreation for residents and visitors to the area. Lake Ontario is lined with many activities, historic sites and events. There’s no end to the fun and adventure the lake has to offer, and now there is no better time to start exploring!
